About

Mission Statement

The Common Tongue is a non-profit production company dedicated to achieving artistic excellence through the development of new works by both established and emerging writers.

By investigating the playwright’s power and uniting diverse groups within the theatre community, both home and abroad, The Common Tongue strives to tell simple and truthful stories that speak to our generation’s search for identity, purpose and meaning.

Who We Are

The Common Tongue was founded in 2008 by a group of alumni from The Atlantic Theater Company’s Professional Conservatory.  TCT has produced works in both New York and Los Angeles and has founding members from as far afield as England and Australia and some as close to home as Brooklyn and Queens. Originally ensemble-based, TCT now also produces projects by and with artists from all different backgrounds.

Since 2008, the company has been fortunate enough to work with Pulitzer Prize, Tony and Obie Award Winning artists. Collaborators have included Edward Albee, Hal Brooks, Eric Bross, Tom Cudworth, Kathleen Butler, Brenda Currin, Bruce Dow, Wendy MacLeod, Marian Seldes, John Shea, Lucy Thurber, Angelica Torn and Neil Wechsler.
